Multiple Chemical Sensitivity
Awareness Month
Multiple organizations around the world have put forth great effort to
establish May as Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) awareness month.
MCS affects more than 48 million men, women, and children of all races.
Even though it is widespread, public awareness of the toxicity of com-
mon household and yard products and ways to manage and accommo-
date MCS remains limited.
Patients with MCS must learn to live with symptoms that are often
devastating and debilitating. Sufferers report wide-ranging symptoms,
including headache, fatigue, dizziness, nausea, congestion, itching,
sneezing, sore throat, chest pain, changes in heart rhythm, breathing
problems, muscle pain or stiffness, skin rash, diarrhea, bloating, gas, con-
fusion, trouble concentrating, memory problems and mood changes.
As MCS awareness increases, improvements in nutrition and safety, as
well as safer household and yard products, are being made. In addition
to helping MCS sufferers, by using the least toxic products and improv-
ing the environment in which we live, work, and play, we will create a
healthier environment for all of us.
In recognition of MCS, Mayor Merle S. Gorden and City Council pro-
claimed May 2016 as "Multiple Chemical Sensitivity Awareness Month"
to better inform the community about its effects and how to create a
healthier environment.
As MCS awareness increases, improvements in nutrition and safety,
as well as safer household and yard products, are being made.
